A Viking On The Racetrack // Egy viking a versenypályán

Pål Varhaug this year competed in the Auto GP World Series, in which championship he finished on second place.

Pål was born on 26th January, 1991 in Stavanger, Norway. He, his parents and his brother, Ole live in Ålgård. His father, Jardar – who is his manager - helps him achieve, that he might be the first Norwegian driver in the Formula 1. Pål started karting at the age of five. He was 16, when he crowned “Talent of the year” by the Norwegian Autosport Federation in 2007.

This spring I had the pleasure to meet and spend almost two days with them. They were very kind and friendly. After the weekend they said goodbye as they know me for thousand years.  Now, when I asked for an interview with him, he answered my questions willingly, despite the fact that he is currently resting after the last race.

Why did You start go-kart??

My brother was doing karting and I got to try. After that I could not stop racing

Was somebody who weren't happy, because You'd like racing??
No.

How do You remember your first race in 1996??
Yes, I remember it very well because I won it.

What's your dream??
To become a World Champion in F1.

Do You have an idol, who You admire??
My Idol is Kimi Rãikkönen.

Which is your prize which You're proudest??
I’m proud of a lot of my prizes, but the one that I am the most proud of have to be the Italian Champion in Formula Renault 2.0 trophy.

Which was your most memorable race??
When I won the First GP3 race ever in Barcelona.

Who is the driver You would like to racing with?? (May it from the past too.)
I would love to race with Kimi or Senna. That would be amazing.

What do You feel/think when You stand up on the grid and then You start??
I feel nothing, it’s very quiet.. too quiet, before the lights come on I have to scream and shout to get ready for the start. Just like a Viking.

Have You ever feared on the track??
Normally I never do that, if I would do it I would be slow.. but yes, it have happened that I have feared..

The most of pilots have mascot. Do You have too, which always must be with You??
No, I don’t really have one, maybe I should get one!

Do You have motto??
Winners never quit, Quitters never win.

What other sports do You like (and doing)??
I like and do snowboarding, football and like to watch most of sports.

What did teachers say about you in your school report??
I don’t remember.

What do You do in your freetime??
Training, working out. Be with friends, play video games against them. I am too good in racing games so I have to play other sports games against them. Do sports with my friends..

What’s your favourite music and movie??
I like a lot of music and a lot of movies.. but to point out my fav music and movie I think it would have to be House and The Senna Movie.

What do You think of this year??
It have been a good year, but I have had some bad luck that costed me a lot of points.

How much influenced the championship your repeated „meeting” with Sirotkin on the track??
Well, it made me loose a win, and to loose a lot of points.. I would have been able to fight for the champion title if he would not push me off the track 2 times..

How do You celebrate after your victory??
Usually I can’t celebrate to much because I have a race the next day, but if I win the Sunday race I celebrate with the team or family.

What your plans and possibilities for next year(s)??
Gp2 or World Series by Renault.

Which three words You use to describe yourself??
Figher, targeted and a winner.

Pål Varhaug idén az Auto GP világsorozatban versenyzett, ahol a második helyen végzett a bajnokságban.

Pål 1991. január 26-án született Stavangerben, Norvégiában. Ålgårdban lakik szüleivel és bátyjával, Ole-val. Édesapja Jardar, egyben a menedzsere is, aki segíti fiát célja elérésében, abban, hogy ő legyen az első norvég versenyző a Forma 1-ben. 5 évesen kezdett go-kartozni. 2007-ben, 16 éves korában az „Év felfedezettje” címet nyerte el Norvégiában.

Idén tavasszal volt szerencsém találkozni és majd’ két napot eltöltenem velük. E versenyhétvége után úgy köszöntek el tőlünk, mint akiket ezer éve ismernek. Most is, mikor kértem, hogy szeretnék interjút készíteni vele, szívesen válaszolt a kérdéseimre, annak ellenére, hogy jelenleg Amerikában pihen az utolsó idei versenye után (mely szintén az Egyesült Államokban volt).

Bátyám go-kartozott és én is kipróbáltam. Aztán nem hagytam abba.

Nem.

Hogyan emlékszel az első versenyedre, mely 1996-ban volt??

Igen, kellemes emlék, mert megnyertem.

Mi az álmod??

Hogy Forma 1-es világbajnok legyek.

Ki a példaképed, akire felnézel??

Kimi Rӓikkönen.

Melyik díjadra vagy a legbüszkébb??

Nagyon sok díjamra büszke vagyok, de leginkább arra, hogy bajnok lettem az Olasz Formula Renault 2.0 sorozatban.

Melyik a legemlékezetesebb versenyed??

Az, amikor megnyertem az első GP3-as versenyemet Barcelonában.

Melyik versenyzővel szeretnél együtt versenyezni?? (Lehet a múltból is)

Kimi Rӓikkönen-nel vagy Ayrton Senna-val szeretnék. Lenyűgöző lenne.

Mit érzel/gondolsz, amikor felállsz a rajtrácsra, majd mikor elrajtolsz??

Nem érzek semmit, nagy a csend… túl nagy, mielőtt a rajt-lámpák kigyulladnak nekem síkitanom és kiabálnom kell, hogy felkészüljek a rajtra. Akárcsak egy viking.

Féltél valaha pályán??

Általában nem, mert ha félnék, akkor lassú lennék… de igen előfordult már.

Sok versenyzőnek van kabalája. Neked is van, ami ott kell, hogy legyen veled??

Nem, egyáltalán nincs, talán kellene egy!

Van mottód??

„A győztesek soha nem adják fel, a gyávák soha nem győznek.”

Milyen más sportokat szeretsz, akár űzni is??

Szeretek snowboardozni, focizni és a legtöbb sportot szeretem nézni.

Mit mondtak rólad a tanáraid??

Nem emlékszem.

Mit csinálsz a szabadidődben??

Edzek, barátokkal vagyok, videojátékozok velük. Túl jó vagyok a versenyzős játékokban, így mást is játszunk. Ezenkívül sportolok a barátokkal.

Mi a kedvenc zenéd, filmed??

Sok zenét és filmet szeretek, talán ha választani kell a House-t szeretem és a Senna filmet.

Mit gondolsz erről az évről??

Jó év volt, némi balszerencsével, ami sok pontomba került.

Mennyire befolyásolta a bajnokságot az ismétlődő „találkozásod” Sirotkin-nal a pályán (orosz versenyző – akivel idén a második helyért harcoltak)??

Nos, vesztettem el emiatt győzelmet és sok pontot… Harcolhattam volna a bajnoki címért, ha kétszer nem tolt volna le a pályáról.

Hogyan ünnepelsz meg egy győzelmet??

Általában nem tudom megünnepelni, mert másnap versenyzek, de ha vasárnap nyerek, akkor a csapattal vagy a családdal ünnepelek.

Mik a tervek, lehetőségek a következő évre??

GP2 vagy a World Series by Renault.

Melyik három szóval jellemeznéd magadat??

Harcos, céltudatos, győztes.
